1:1 Meetings.
The most important recurring meeting: feedback, alignment, and growth between a manager and an employee.
What a 1:1 is
A 1:1 meeting (one-on-one) is a regular check-in between two people in an organization — typically a manager and an employee. It's used to give feedback, keep each other in the loop, resolve issues, and help participants grow in their roles.
The free-form, employee-focused nature that goes beyond status updates is what makes the 1:1 special. It's often considered the most important meeting you can have because it lays the foundation for a trusting and productive work relationship.
Why it matters for employees
1:1s help you get the feedback and guidance you need to be successful and to advance in your career. By listening and giving timely guidance, your manager becomes a partner for your success.
They give you the safety of knowing where you stand based on constant feedback. If you need to correct course, you'll know in time. 1:1s also create space to bring up things that are difficult to raise during busy work days.
Running the 1:1
Team members must create and roughly fill out the agenda before the 1:1.
- Be on time.
- Stick to the agenda whenever possible — if the agenda doesn't work, update it.
- Give the meeting your full attention, with your camera on.
